Charlie Austin 1

13 shots to 6 in favour of the winners suggests it was a one sided encounter but stats never always give the true reflection of how a match goes. Piatti opened the scoring from a tight angle, smashing the ball in off the underside of the bar. It was a tidy finish from the angle he was at. It remained 0-1 until HT despite Brizuela having a cracking chance and blazing over when it seemed easier to score.

Marco Ruben doubled the lead on 61'. A classy run and cross from Samuel Garcia Sanchez found Ruben at the back post and he beat the defender in the air to put Newcastle 2-0 in front.

Al Soma had two long range efforts beaten away & Piatti headed against the bar but Al Nassr had a great chance to pull a goal back when a mazy run from Angoua found him 1v1 on the keeper only for the ball to slide wide of the goal. A goal was pulled back soon after from Charlie Austin after Origi found him inside the box. It seemed Stanislas was favourite to nick the ball but Austin held him off and slotted past Vaclik.

In the end it wasn't to be for Al Nassr as Newcastle held on for a valuable 3 points.
